And in the first 9 days of 2025, three men have already been killed - fisherman Godfrey Hyde, Belizean American George Brown, and now the main witness in the case against Oscar Selgado, Giovanni Ramirez.
The ComPol said yesterday that in those cases, the police would not have been able to prevent them from happening, and he's hoping that members of the public can resolve their differences without resorting to violence.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"If we look at the different murders that occurred, the one in Turneffe, I don't see what police could have done to prevent that. Yesterday again, what could the police do, and this one again today. So while yes we're at 3 murders so far this year, it is three murders too much, certainly yes, but again I don't think that the public would unreasonably say that it is due to lack of policing efforts. We can't prevent everything and we do hope that people do exercise some patience, adjust their attitudes and always try to resolve conflict by other means other than the use of lethal force and that's why we have been pushing through LIU, through our police interventions and through the interventions done by Brother Nuri."
