The 125th Christmas Bird Count
Fri, January 10, 2025
The Christmas Bird Count occurs every year from December 14 to January 5 across the United States, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. During the most recent count, a total of over 40 million birds were recorded, continuing a concerning trend of declining bird numbers despite increased efforts and expanded geographic coverage. Participants documented over 2,300 species, contributing to a record-breaking 2,677 completed counts. Participation also reached a new high, with over 83,000 individuals.

In Belize, last year's counts recorded between 183 and 265 species at various field locations. Observers used the eBird App to log bird species they saw or heard during the count, with all data subsequently uploaded to the National Audubon Society database. Freelance journalist Jose Sanchez reports on the 125th Christmas Bird Count.
