In November, when we announced the possibility that Lee Mark Chang would offer himself as a UDP candidate against the Leader of the opposition Shyne Barrow - most thought it was a bluff.
But, today he proved that he wasn't just stunting when he launched his candidacy with a splash of fanfare right around the corner from the constituency office of his one time party leader Shyne Barrow:
At the building on Euphrates that is now called UDP headquarters there was some buzz today at the converted grocery store.
Even a crowd outside - a rare show of street muscle for the UDP. Inside there were t-shirts being given out and standing room only as supporters of Tracy Panton's UDP welcomed their new colleague:
Patrick Faber, UDP Collett
"When the general elections of 2025 is called, the new candidate for our united democratic party will be Lee Mark Chang."
And with the launch of a campaign that did not seem wanting for funds, Chang - who grew up across the street made a show of his Mesop bonafides:
Lee Mark Chang, Mesop Std. Bearer - TPUDP
"Almost a month now, I've been canvassing the ground, meeting some old old friends, a couple of them right here where we used to go play ball at Natius. I remember back in those days, I used to be the only Chinese boy in this neighborhood. I was play baseball with the likes of Erville, Errol, remember that Errol? Way back then."
But is he a contender of just a Barrow blocker there to make sure that whatever happens, Shyne does not win?
Tracy Panton, Leader TPUDP
"The UDP can only rebuild after the general elections if Shyne is not the leader of the party, or not the leader of the opposition in the House."
"And he can be neither of those if he is not a member of the House. Our choice is therefore very clear. Either Shyne agrees to accept and endorse the will of the delegates made clear on October 20th, or we will work to ensure that he is not successful in his bid to remain the aera representative for Mesop."
"It is our view that this brave undertaking will effectively ensure that Shyne does not win in Mesop."
But Chang says his candidacy is not just to play spoiler:
Lee Mark Chang, Mesop Std. Bearer - TPUDP
"When I fight I noh fight fi lose - you could ask any one of my opponents. I fight to win. I am not here as no spoiler. I come here to win the division and to taje care of the people."
"My initial information, the feel that they want vote back een wah UDP, but they don't want him. So he lose his own division."
Now - if he is serious about winning - Chang is in a race against time to unseat a sitting representative - it's not going to be easy and it certainly won't be cheap.
