Last night, we broke the news about Leroy Almendarez's sudden departure from his post as the CEO of the Social Security Board. Staff was informed via an email that simply said, quote, "management wishes to inform you that with immediate effect Deputy Jerome Palma will be acting as CEO, until further notice."
Responding to our request for a comment or confirmation this morning, Almendarez said, quote, "confirming that I am no longer the CEO at Social Security."
And then this afternoon, the institution sent a terse press release saying, quote, "The Social Security Board welcomes Mr. Jerome Palma as acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and takes this opportunity to acknowledge…the valuable contributions that Dr. Leroy Almendarez made during his brief tenure as CEO." End quote.
It was brief indeed, hardly more than 5 months. And his departure is puzzling. And here's why. Yesterday afternoon he addressed the police all officers conference, speaking about his plans for social security for the years ahead and how he wanted to do a countrywide tour to listen to police concerns about social security."
He finished that in the afternoon - and within hours he was gone, relieved of his post. Our reports tell us his departure was a decision of the board.
