And while the dance is around the election date, the real issue is redistricting. Government gave the court an undertaking to deal with it in a consent order. Since then, a report has been prepared and legislation tabled in the house - but not passed. But, of course, the court cannot compel parliament to vote on a matter - and that's why Minister Jose Mai yesterday said that in government's calculation redistricting has been dealt with:
Reporter
"Are you worried as a sitting minister and as an area representative in the House that this could affect the general elections that are posed for this year?"
Jose Mai, Minister of Agriculture
"No, no, not at all. That matter has, in my view, I think, or in my recollection, had been settled and I don't know where this was coming from. I think what they were thinking that tomorrow Friday the prime minister would have called elections or set the date for the elections, but I don't know that the prime minister has to set the date, or announce the date at a sitting of the house. He could call a press conference and do so."
