One week ago, Shevaughn Gotoy was arraigned for several charges after he reportedly fired a gun at the Marion Jones Stadium during a football match. But he wasn't charged for the killing of 39 year old Brandon Baptist. That's because he claims it was in self-defense, and that Baptist pulled out a weapon first. And police seem to agree.
Well, Baptist's family isn't buying that. His mother came to our studio today to beg for justice for her son.
Denise Flowers, Mother of Deceased
"To me, the way how I look at it, to me they're on one side. To me, that is murder, they murdered my son because they attacked my son from behind. When the young man held him, the next one shot him. How could that ever be self-defense? That is not self defense. You said that Brandon Baptist pulled a gun, I need to see the gun that Brandon Baptist pulled. I need to see the evidence because to me, as a mother, Brandon Baptist is not a dog and I will not leave Brandon Baptist's death like that, I want justice because this is my second child that I lost."
"I don't feel good about that because I'm not getting any justice and I need to get justice because that is murder. Then plus when they finished, they threw my son over and told him dead ***obscenity***, that is not a dog, that is a human."
"If I kill somebody, definitely, I would be saying it's not me. I will say it's not me because I don't want to go to jail, so what do you think they did? "Oh they will buy it, it's Brandon Baptist that pulled the thing at them." And again, how in the world those guys that hang with gang members get a license for their gun."
"And my son, they said, oh the gunshot killed him, my son was bruised up and messed up because I checked his body."
"You see Brandon Baptist, I'm not saying he's a saint but the ComPol knows I am a good parent because many years ago I arrested my own son and took him to Mr Chester so I don't know what it is but with me, I will leave everything in God's hands because God has the answer."
Courtney Menzies:
"So you don't believe that he even had a firearm in that stadium?"
Denise Flowers, Mother of Deceased
"Well, I can't say yes, I can't say no but if he had a firearm and he went out there, he didn't go to fight. If he did have it, because I don't know."
A statement by Godoy's family says that he is not affiliated with any gangs and only pulled out his firearm after he, quote, "came under attack from a known gang leader."
