And while he's staying positive about the new administration in Washington - the fact is, every Central American country except for Belize and Nicaragua - has agreed to accept US flights with illegal immigrants which the Trump administration can't send to their country of origin. Right now, there's a hotel in Panama where that country is holding hundreds of deported migrants from Asian, Middle Eastern and African countries that the US could not easily send back to their home countries. So, they sent them to Panama - and now that country has to figure out how to get those persons back home.
Could the same or something similar happen to Belize? Or if we refuse - as the PM had earlier said he would - could this country risk isolation in the hemisphere?
We asked the Foreign Minister:
Jules Vasquez:
"Should we be concerned about being isolated? Because now we see that Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Guatemala have accepted flights from the US."
"as a safe third country, as they call it, of of, people who America can't send back to their own countries such as Afghanistan and China. "
Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education
"No, I mean, we you know, we have had discussions with the charge d'affaires."
"No such request has been made of Belize as yet. "
Jules Vasquez:
"If it is made?"
Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education
"But if it, if it is made, then it's something we will have to, we will have to see the details of that proposal. We have said to them it is something that we would have to take to the cabinet. And the cabinet would ultimately make that decision, depending on the details of that specific proposal."
