And in the season of election, on Monday we showed you the massive crowd that came out for the PUP national convention. There was a roll call of all 31 constituencies and standard bearers - and there was a special guest: the commissioner himself. He was there in what appeared to be a powder blue shirt. Today we asked him if he was there as a police officer or a supporter.
Courtney Menzies:
"Sir, were you in a blue shirt at the PUP convention, and if so why were you not in your uniform if you were there to conduct your commissioner duties?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I don't need to be in uniform to perform my duties. As you would know, the police act clearly states that police officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If something were to happen in my view, whether I'm in plain clothes or uniform, I must act. I have a legal duty to do so. And as much as your news director, my bestie, Jules had an issue with my presence. I have all right to have been there. You were there, Courtney."
Courtney Menzies:
"Working. Not in a blue shirt for sure."
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I was working too."
Courtney Menzies:
"I wasn't in a blue shirt though."
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I have seen Jules Vasquez at convention wearing blue and shirts. I'm not saying that he is there to be a part of any political show. We have a right to wear what we want. I must now be guided by what the media wants me to wear? Come on."
Jules Vasquez:
"There are public expectations of you."
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I am free to wear what I want, and what I was wearing was a, I think it's a mint green, light green shirt, I don't know if Jules is color blind but I have all right to be there."
Courtney Menzies:
"But you weren't at Tracy's convention."
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I couldn't be in Scotland and in Belize at the same time. I was in Scotland."
