And while Barrow's missing candidates in Belize City couldn't be contacted before 4, Samuels apparently made it all the way to the Civic before he got cold feet.
Later - much like an employee making use of his 16 allotted sick days - Samuels sent in this doctor's paper, citing syncope - or fainting - as his reason for "missing work."
But before that, he was even captured on camera parading down Vernon Street. And earlier that day, he was even on Wave Radio's Fus Ting Da Mawnin, discussing his pending nomination and encouraging voters to come out. Courtney Menzies took a look at how Dean Samuel pulled a fast one and fainted the crowd:
Host:
"Today you know this is the final day for everybody who wants to run."
Dean Samuels, Pickstock
"After today, if you don't make it on the list"
Both
"You ain't gonna make it again."
Dean Samuels, Pickstock
"After 4:00 you ain't."
And that's exactly what happened to Shyne Barrow's proposed candidate for Pickstock - the very same Dean Samuels. At closing time of. 4:00 yesterday evening, he did not get nominated - only nine hours after he made those comments.
But on Saturday, he sat proudly in the pool of candidates - the fresh faces that Barrow used to replace the "dinosaurs" as he characterized them.
And yesterday afternoon, Samuels was seen parading with the rest of his party down Vernon Street, on his way to the Civic Center.
So what happened in those few hours? At 7:30 that morning, he seemed ready for the election battle ahead:
Host:
"Dean, I know you're all excited, take it easy."
Dean Samuels, Pickstock
"Excited, tired, hyper, anxiety, everything in one."
Host:
"Today is Nomination Day."
Dean Samuels, Pickstock
"I got a little bit of sleep last night, I'm like if I crashed into a house bottom."
"you need to understand when an area elects you and you disappear on those people. When they elect you, you're all in those people's house. Like right now, you're all in these people's house when they didn't see you for four years. Right now you're in everybody's house, you're walking the streets, you're shaking hands, you are getting off a little roof, door, anything people want you're getting off of. When the time now you need back the people but before that you didn't walk the area."
But Samuels was the one who did the disappearing yesterday after he ghosted his party. Later, he put out a cryptic Facebook message, saying that he would explain himself, even though he didn't feel he owed anyone an explanation.
The post then says quote, "In the end I chose to do something I never really practiced doing, I put myself first."
It's kinda the same thing he was advising voters to do earlier that day:
Dean Samuels, Pickstock
"Sometimes we can't love parties more than we love ourselves, we can't love politicians more than we love ourselves."
"I never did say I was UDP or PUP because the truth of the matter is, I'm not into politics, but I live in this country."
And though in his post, he doesn't give a reason why he didn't show up, he did clarify that he still believed the UDP was the best choice for the country. He then attached this Frederick Douglass quote as sort of a bow on his last gift to the party he asked to be a part of.
But with no explanation, there is plenty of speculation. And while his reasons aren't clear, one thing's for sure - like he said in the morning - yesterday was a prime opportunity for a little "come up."
Host:
"You know the PUP is contacting their people and telling them to come in to pick up that envelope. "
Dean Samuels, Pickstock
"Those people will get paid today like crazy. People will be coming up today like crazy. This is the only time for them to come up."
"The truth of the matter, that's how politics is being played right now, it's a business. " |
