"I think the symbols would have been more confusing for the voter because now it's not only looking for a name and a colour but looking for a symbol. It distracts from the process. I don't know that the election and boundaries commission have in law the right to assign symbols. They do have the discretion to determine legally what colour is assigned so I think they acted in accordance with the legislation as I understand the legislation to state and we go from there."

But could they have made a bad situation slightly less bad by adding symbols on top of those various factions of red?

"We asked for the red formally from the eElections and Boundaries Commission. We wrote to the Commission we made the request, we are members of the United Democratic Party and the party has always been afforded the colour red on the ballot on election day. Fortunately we did not have to seek an alternative at this time."
