From Monday we've been reporting on the three jewish men detained in Belize - on the suspicion that they may be members of an extremist jewish sect called Lev Tahor which is based in Guatemala.
Well, police have since confirmed that two of them are wanted for multiple child abductions in Guatemala - and so they were happy to send them back through the western border today.
Here's the story with exclusive video:
On Saturday night, the three Jewish men were intercepted here in San Elena. They had hired a local shuttle service to take them from an Airbnb in the rural Belize district to Cayo. The driver became suspicious when they had him waiting for an extended period in front of a hotel - and then they came down with this orange sack. That was a red flag for him - and his boss contacted the police who detained the travelers right there.
The sack had nothing suspicious in it -but there was suspicion that these men who spoke fluent Spanish could be members of an extreme jewish sect in Guatemala - whose members are facing charges related to human trafficking.
They were found in a hotel room with 23 year old American Moshe Alter who - it was determined - had entered the country illegally.
He was charged with illegal entry and the other two men, 33 year old Canadian Avrohom Dinkel and 24 year old American Chaim Malka were charged with harboring him. They had entered the country legally through the PGIA - but flying from Mexico.
They were fined $1,000 which they paid. In Cayo Magistrate's court yesterday they resisted being sent back to their home countries and asked to be sent back to Guatemala.
Belizean authorities were happy to cooperate and today at the Western border for the release of these three men, there was a significant law enforcement presence - with police, MIT, Interpol and we are told the US. Embassy representatives.
Inside the building they were handed over to Guatemalan Interpol agents, because two of the men are wanted for questioning in connection with abducting 7 minor aged females - whose whereabouts are unknown.
They packed their belongings, including that same red sack that got them caught - and were loaded into the Interpol pickup where they would be handed over to the Guatemalans on the other side.
For Belize, it's one less law enforcement headache - and they can boast that they're the ones who caught the men - even if it was just a drivers' hunch.
And while those three are gone, notably, tonight police are looking for another member of this sect. There is a wanted person bulletin out for 38 year old
Yoel Malka, a 38-year-old Israeli National who is being sought for questioning regarding the disappearance of 13 minors in Guatemala, believed to be in Belize.
He is wanted along with a Belizean man.
