Tonight, narco elements, or at least local organized crime has shown its hand boldly in the North.
Police found the body of 29 year old Raheem Usher - who had been missing for a month - with a handwritten message for the cops.
Here's more on the murder and the message behind it:
San Antonio villagers saw this body wrapped in a white sheet at the entrance to the village at daybreak. They called the police and the area was processed by the seeds of crime team and the doctor who found that it was the body of Raheem Usher. He had been shot fatally to the head. The regional commander told us more.
Sr. Supt. Chris Noble, Northern Regional Commander
"The deceased male who has been confirmed to be the missing person from Libertad. The scene, was processed. We received the services of a doctor on scene, and after identification the body was removed and taken to the forensic lab awaiting a postmortem."
But this was no ordinary crime scene or a body casually strewn on the road. Raheem Usher had been missing since January 25th. He was last seen in Libertad Village. His body was found elaborately wrapped in multiple layers of plastic duct and electrical tape over his eyes and handcuffs on his wrists. Most tellingly, all this was wrapped in a sheet on which his killers handwrote in two colors, a message.
It says, quote, This is going to happen to those chapulines who continue to bring down planes with drugs, end quote. It then names six police officers attached to the Corozal formation. One of those officers is a relative of the deceased.
Jules Vasquez:
"We have seen a photograph of sheet with a very clear message written on it. It's a threat really. To members of your formation in Corozal."
Sr. Supt. Chris Noble, Northern Regional Commander
"I don't know of any threats to the formation. And whatever you have is what we have. And I appreciate that you have more than we do, because seemingly our officers work for you. Whatever message. It's a part of our investigation, which is which started on or around the 25th of January. And it is continuing now with this new information we have."
"As you say, a message to somebody, because that's none to me."
Jules Vasquez:
"But one of the officers named in that message is a relative of the deceased and it is saying that these things will happen to to an end like this would befall these people because they are involved in plane landing."
Sr. Supt. Chris Noble, Northern Regional Commander
"In that case, I'll say that police officers are to protect life and property. But I don't know that training is done and had for plane landings."
Jules Vasquez:
"Obviously, there was time and precision employed in wrapping the body, applying a duct tape, putting the handcuffs, you know, writing that note. Some of it is in blue, some of it is in red on a large sheet. It's clear that there was a level of criminal sophistication and orchestration designed to send a message. Are you concerned that it is an expression by organized criminal elements to send a message to police and to the society?"
Sr. Supt. Chris Noble, Northern Regional Commander
"It only shows that we have evolved as a society and persons utilize all the manners in which to one, perpetrate crime and two send forward messages. If that is the case."
But there is a compelling parallel. In June of 2023, the brother of the deceased, Curtis Usher, was shot and killed by a high powered rifle in what was considered a narco related attack in Libertad.
Sr. Supt. Chris Noble, Northern Regional Commander
"We can't say that the incidents are connected because in 2023, when the relative was targeted, that investigation was done. And there might be a possibility of us looking at what that investigation was to carry us forward with this current one."
Jules Vasquez:
"There are suspicions that he was killed by the narcos or the cartel."
Sr. Supt. Chris Noble, Northern Regional Commander
"Suspicions. Again, don't go anywhere. We have to use what we have and go on a fact finding mission sir."
And while Noble stonewalls, police can't get away from the fact that a very chilling message has been sent into their own ranks and the society will also draw its own conclusions about narco penetration in the North.
San Antonio Villagers report seeing unusual movements in the area around 3:00 this morning. The Commissioner told us he does not believe it is the work of the cartel.
