And in San Pedro, police are still investigating the mysterious death of the 3 American women - but there are no conclusive leads.
23-year-old Kaoutar Naqqad, 24-year-old Imane Mallah and 26-year-old Wafae El-Arar, were staying at the Royal Kahal Beach Resort where they were all found dead on Saturday.
Today the ComPol explained that he has been in contact with their family. He added that the women bought a bottle of tequila and took it back to their room. However, they're still waiting on the tests to confirm what exactly the women ingested.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I had said in an interview I gave to the international press was that they consumed non-alcoholic beverages while they were in that area. They purchased a bottle of tequila, which they took with them to their room. We have no video footage showing them consuming that tequila. If they consumed it in their room we cannot see that because inside the room does not have cameras."
"I have done some research on tequila following that discovery. I'm not a person who consumes alcoholic, not even champagne, not even wine, I don't drink. So I did my research on tequila and my research did reveal that tequila, even the not so fake one can have deadly consequences at some point in time if it is abused. But again, the national forensic services are on top of this and every piece of evidence gathered from the scene including the tequila is going to be tested to see what they contained and once those results are in then we will notify the public of the findings."
Reporter:
"Is there any pressure from the US State Department for you to conclude this case?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"The US Embassy is with us every step of the way and I must say that they have been extremely patient working with us. They understand that it is of mutual interest to us as well as them to arrive at a definitive cause of death and they do understand our limitation and are doing their best to try and understand us in areas where we do not have the expertise so I am grateful for the support we have been getting from them so far. I also had the opportunity yesterday to have a conference call with all the family members of the three young ladies and I gave them an update in terms of what we have done and what we will be doing moving forward in respect of the investigation and they were extremely happy to have heard from me and I was able to answer the questions that they have, things that were bothering them and having gotten the answers to those questions they had, they seemed to have been extremely happy with what we're doing so far."
We note that In November of 2024, six tourists died in Laos from ingesting methanol-tainted alcohol. Among those who died, there were two people from Australia, two from Denmark, one from Britain, and one from the U.S. A majority of victims were 19 to 20 years old.
