Cops Killed Dog While Responding To Domestic Dispute
Mon, March 3, 2025
Over the weekend, Kieran Gonzalez, a resident of Benque Viejo, took to Facebook to complain that cops killed his pitbull and took its body from the home. LAter in the day, the officers returned with 3 mobiles and took him to the police station.

In his post, he failed to mention that the police initially went to the home because they were responding to a domestic dispute. The ComPol clarified today that the dog was about to attack the officer who shot it and they tried to render assistance. He added that Gonzalez ran away during the incident and they returned to detain him. Williams explained the situation from the department's perspective.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I'm happy to hear that you got other information because even having had the additional information, you all did not change your story, you kept it as is. It's like when you are feeding the sharks with little bilams to continue to allow the department to be ridiculed via social media and yet as you rightly said, the police had received a call of a domestic issue at that house and police responded as they would normally do. Domestic situations are not things that we take very lightly because we can see where it can go from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds. So when we do get these calls we take them very seriously. And so the police went there to check into that complaint and upon the police arrival, the young man who was the subject of the complaint, he ran. Police entered the yard and upon entering the yard apparently the dog was on a verandah and the verandah was sealed off but the dog was able to get away from the verandah and attack the police and the police had no other choice but to shoot the dog. Having shot the dog, the young lady who is the common law of the young man requested of the police to assist her in getting the dog from the house to take the dog to a vet because the dog was still alive, the dog was not dead at that particular time. And so the police again out of generosity assisted her in moving the dog from there to another house where she resides then she would have taken the dog to the vet but it turned out that the dog ended up dying sometimes around 8am yesterday morning. The young man in question, apparently he arrived at home after having escaped or fleeing the police and he found out what happened. At the same time, the corporal who was in charge of the gas station at that particular time visited the house to see if he was there and two to explain to them what had transpired but when the corporal got there, he was met with a great degree of hostility from the young man and his brother who as you can see in the video stood at the gate with machetes, shouting and insulting the police in the most derogative manner. And as the corporal was saying to the, it was not me who shot the dog and the corporal was right, he was not on that operation when the dog was shot, he just went back there to have seen what transpired and to likewise see if the young man was there because he was wanted by police."

"From my perspective, the officer acted professionally when he saw the situation, he could not manage it, he left. me having seen the video, I sent the video to the western regional commander with instructions, they are to go and find that young man and his brother and take them into custody so they can be dealt with so when you hear them say that they came back with 3 vehicle loads of police, I sent them there to pick him up."

And the ComPol added that civilians who assault officers in any way need to be charged to send a message. He also compared the response to this case with that of PC Deandre Reid who was dismissed for killing the governor general's dog.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"We saw a situation in Dangriga where a police officer on duty was hit in the face with a bottle, breaking the bottle in the officer's face. These are things that show gross disrespect to the police and when they do occur, we have to stand by our officers and support them in doing what is right. So that person with the incident in Dangriga has been arrested and charged and that matter is before the court as well."

Courtney Menzies:
"With this one in Benque, the two men were picked up, what charges are they facing?"

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"They'll be charged with insulting the police and aggravated assault. There is also a complaint from the common law wife that the young man also stole her phone during that same domestic issue so we're also looking to charge him for theft in respect of that matter. And again I need to say, as Belizeans we need to decide what we want. When we had the incident with the governor general's dog, even though the footage depicts that the officer in question went after a dog that was not aggressing him and killed that dog, people were like, oh it's just a dog, it's just a dog. Now here you have a situation where it's totally different where the dog aggressed the officers and the officers did what needed to have been done to protect themselves, the public want to vilify the police officers. We have to decide what we want, it's still a dog likewise."

Courtney Menzies:
"But can the problem be linked to- because in my tenure of being a journalist, I've dealt with maybe 4 or 5 incidents of police shooting dogs for whatever reason. Isn't part of the problem that some of these cops are trigger happy when they meet these dogs?"

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I'm not going to say yes or no, people have different reactions to dogs. I for one, I don't like dogs. If I am around a dog, I am always fearful that the dog is going to attack me, that's just me. Other people are different, they may be more open and more receptive to dogs. So it may have a lot to do with how the individual officers feel about the dogs and again, if it is that you have a dog in your surroundings that appears to be aggressive or that is aggressing you, if you are a person who has a phobia for dogs, you will react in a certain way likewise so I really and truly could understand where you're coming from, that could and could not be the case."
