Peyrefitte Says He Has To Go But Shyne Doesn't Want To Leave
Mon, March 17, 2025
And while the PM won't miss Shyne in the House - the UDP can;t miss him yet - because he's still hanging on as leader. We pressed Chairman Peyrefitte on how the party proposes to overcome Barrow's entrenched position at party headquarters:

Jules Vasquez
"So now the fly in the ointment, to speak, is Shyne Barrow. He has said publicly more than once that his plan is to continue to hold on as leader until a national convention is held, and then he will hand over."

"I proposed to him the Manuel Esquivel model .and he said, "no, no" he won't hand over. He has to wait for the court hearing etc, etc. What's your view?"

Michael Peyreffite, Chairman - UDP
"No, I don't share that position. My position is this: He was the leader going into March 12th. When he lost and Hugo won as the first deputy. Hugo Patt is the interim leader of the party. Until we have a national convention to choose a full time leader. That's my position."

"That's anybody's position. The leader of the United Democratic Party must come from the National Assembly of the country. Shyne Barrow is not a member of the House. And I would bet the farm that Tracy Panton won't appoint him a Senator."

Jules Vasquez
"He's saying, accepted, but I will hold on until a convention is held. Is he wrong in that?"

Michael Peyreffite, Chairman - UDP
"I don't know, he could hold on to whatever he wants to hold onto. What I'm saying is this the UDP constitution is clear and behavior and precedent is clear. The leader of the party, you cannot think of becoming or being leader of the party if you're not a member of the National Assembly."

"That if you're the leader of the party and you lose your seat, there's a pecking order. The first deputy, the second deputy, the member who won by the largest percentage of vote, whatever. It is a position is not open to interpretation in my book. Hugo Patt is the current interim leader of the United Democratic Party."

Jules Vasquez
"Have you counseled your former party leader Shyne Barrow on this position?"

Michael Peyreffite, Chairman - UDP
"No, I won't say what we spoke about, but we had a discussion. We had a talk. I thought it was a productive one. I've also spoken to Tracy Panton, and I've also spoken to Hugo Patt. That's my job. That's what I'm supposed to do and what I have made very clear, is that Hugo is the interim leader of this party, to all three of them, and that's the position that Hugo has, whether he wants it or not. for now, as a duty to his party, he needs to hold that position until the next national convention,"

Jules Vasquez
"This is the first time that publicly at least, you have resiled from a position in support of leader, Shyne Barrow, or properly put, in support of Shyne Barrow. You have become known as his defender, or, critics would say, enabler - standing by him or backing him up with what would be significant authority of the chairman's seat. Are you now saying, I could no longer stand with you Shyne Barrow, you de pon yu own."

Michael Peyreffite, Chairman - UDP
"He himself had said that if he won less than ten seats, he would resign. So it was not a matter of anybody enabling any individual or disparaging any other individual. We were supporting a decision made by national convention, a decision that some of us didn't hold lightly."
