Tonight, the fractured UDP has embarked on a new path to unification - that is after Shyne Barrow resigned last night.
Less than an hour after party chairman Mike Peyrefitte appeared on 7News saying Shyne Barrow has no standing and should step down, the former leader sent out his letter of resignation.
The brief message says he is resigning, quote, "with immediate effect and handing over to Deputy Party Leader Hugo Patt to serve as Interim Leader…until the next National Convention to be held this year as per the UDP Constitution."
Summoning a grace note, he adds "It has been the privilege of my life thus far to serve as Party Leader and I pledge to continue to support the UDP in its efforts to rebuild and unite..." End quote.
It's a sharp change of direction for Barrow who - up to Friday - had said he would not step down until a national convention is held to install a new leader. But, after chairman Peyrefitte - who had stood behind Barrow for years - pulled the plug on him publicly last night, Barrow simply had to no choice but to relinquish leadership.
