Currently at the Bliss Center for Performing Arts, a memorial service for Aurelio Martinez is underway, which will be followed by a Paranda concert in his honor. As we told you, Martinez was killed in a plane crash last week. His funeral was held in Ceiba, Honduras, where many Belizeans - including his son Newani Martinez - made the trip by boat then by bus.
But the remembrances continued today with speeches about Martinez's life and his global recognition. Here is a snippet of some of those speeches.
Areini Palacio, NICH Board Member
"Together with the legendary Paul Nabor, they commandeered the Paranda rocket ship that first launch from this very stage, and I was sitting right over there, at the Bliss in Belize, soaring into the stars and into the hearts of all who have ever touched by their music."
"Their voices, the rhythms, and passion continue to resonate a testament to the power of Garifuna culture and the spirit of unity through song. Aurelio and Andy's bond wasn't just built on a shared love for music. It was grounded in a profound respect and devotion to Paul Nabor, their mentor, their senior, their guide. Paul's way of being in the world, his authenticity, his heart, his commitment to the roots of Belizean music shaped the very souls of Aurelio and Andy."
"They learned from him not just how to play music, but how to live music, how to be music. As we share the weight of our grief, we are reminded that Belize and Honduras are more than neighbors. We are bound by a deep love, mutual respect, and a shared cultural heritage."
"In this time of sorrow, we stand in solidarity with our Garifuna brothers and sisters, knowing that the power of friendship and music transcends borders."
Jules Vasquez, Remembrance
"Aurelio was for the world - and because he meant so much to us intimately, that he was one of us - Garifuna, Centroamericano, Hondureno,, Beliceno, sometimes, in this claiming, we lose focus of his global impact, And that's what Ivan asked me to speak about. His death is noted in the Guardian UK, the LA Times, Rolling Stone magazine, NPR which produces the Tiny Desk Concerts, Pitchfork music magazine, and others. He is the only Central American artist to have received so many global accolades in his passing - no one else on our isthmus would be so honored."
At the end of the news, we will have an excerpt from the concert - which is live right now.
