And Chris Coye will be joining them in the Senate on the government's side. As we told you, it took a bit of discussion to get him back onboard. He was sworn in as Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance a whole week after his colleagues. This morning on Sunup on 7, PM Briceno said that initially, he was considering returning to his law firm.
John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Chris is a founding member of probably the most successful law firm that Belize has ever seen. They have a lot of work, they have a lot of responsibility and Eamon, my dear brother, had to leave for that very reason and want to mentor the younger people in the firm because he knows we're not going to be here forever. And so Chris was seriously considering, I think my firm needs me, I need to go but not wanting to go and so I had to appeal to him and say, listen, look at all we have done and the country needs you. And he knows that, he enjoys what he has been doing and realizes that well, we all want money, we all want the niceties in life but also there comes a time when what you want is more than money because his salary is nowhere comparable to what he would make if he was in the law firm. But he decided that he's going to stay and we were trying to work out if should it be as a consultant, as a senator, and you have no idea how happy I was when he said, he'll work it out, he'll be a senator and help me with finance because it's impossible for me to do everything and as the prime minister the burden is tremendous and you have, one day you're going to work and say this is what I'm going to do and something comes up and you have to deal with that so you're always dealing with all kinds of things, trying to get things going and making things moving but then you have all these technical work, especially in finance and for instance trying to straighten up the legislation, how we manage finance, how we fight against money laundering and drug money and terrorism money and all of these things that the US has been putting a clamp on countries."
"We created a good team, we did a good partnership and I trust him so you deal with that and he comes to me and says this is what I did and asks me, how you think we should do this? And then I deal with the politics of everything and so on."
