A 43 year old police officer has been found guilty of sexual assault of a minor - for touching a 13-year-old inappropriately. The child testified in Corozal Magistrate's Court that he took her to the seawall and molested her and even offered her a Smirnoff. But 43 year old Reginald Diego, claims he thought she was an adult and not a child, but he denied committing a sexual act on the girl, despite putting himself on the crime scene with her.
Diego was found guilty of sexual assault late yesterday. He was allowed to leave the court on bail pending his sentencing date set for Wednesday, April 30.
In his defense, Diego told the court he presumed that the girl was an adult due to an SI stating only adults should be on the street after a certain hour. He also alleged that the victim has been coerced by other officers to make the allegations against him. Diego was unrepresented.
