Speaking with the media via Zoom today, the mayor of Belmopan emphasized the horror that anyone near the area would have faced - a barrage of gunfire at high noon in front of a grocery store:
Pablo Cawich, Mayor of Belmopan
"It was very, very, very concerning to see that that action take place in our city. Belmopan is known for being a peaceful city. So 12 or 13 shots being fired in front of a grocery store is definitely, and especially in broad daylight, is very alarming."
"We tend to regularly meet with the police department. We participate, the police department and the council participate in a bi-weekly, sorry, bi-monthly prayer session with some pastors from the Belmopan City area. And during that session, the police usually gives us a briefing of what has happened recently, concerns in the neighborhood or the city. So we will be updated on that, but I have not been briefed as yet."
