Can Intent Be Established In Ayana’s Death?
Mon, November 27, 2023
It's been about a week since Baby Ayana was killed while in the care of her foster parents in Spanish Lookout. Her autopsy revealed she was beaten and the multiple blunt force trauma led to her death. That dire finding has left her biological family in an even greater state of shock and grief.

While her family and the Prime Minister are calling for a murder charge, Police Minister Kareem Musa played it safe last week when he said a murder charge can only be levied if there is intent to kill.

Today we asked him if he believes it's something that can be proven.

Courtney Menzies:
"Do you think that this is a possibility, that you can prove intent in this case?"

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs
"Yes absolutely, and again that will depend on where the investigation goes and where the Director of Public Prosecution directs based on the further investigation that is happening. I've seen many cases in the past upgraded form manslaughter to murder but in the very first instance from the investigation that is what led to the charges of manslaughter but it has happened in the past and it's quite likely to happen now, that if further information comes out, it can be upgraded to murder."
