Today we asked the mayor about Cemetery Road - which, right now, would make a scrub-board look good!...

While there is a new road for the farmers in the Valley of Peace area, when will the rain-battered roads in Belize City begin to see some rehabilitation as well? Today we asked the mayor about Cemetery Road - which, right now, would make a scrub-board look good! The mayor said that the development of the roads falls under MIDH's responsibility. Here's what he further shared with us

Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City
"Cemetery Road, it's a street in the city, but it really fall under the jurisdiction of the minister of infrastructure right. But we always look at how we could collaborate to get things done for the people. We don't throw blame on anyone. We look at it that the City Council Act really delineate what our responsibility and what streets are our responsibility."

"We had to do some immediate ripping of it after the torrential rains that we had experienced for like two weeks. And so we had to really rip it up. We are hoping to really get that stretch of the road from the bridge, at least to the George Price bus completed so as to alleviate the dust that people experience because we have had many complaints about it."

Reporter:
"We see a number of roadworks happening in the city. Is this all just in time for election?"

Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City
"No, we have been doing this from day one. You have to understand, though, my friend, that Covid, Lisa. Really were disruptive events. Really disruptive and so while you might people might look at the streets and that is just trivial and the city could get those stuff done within a jiffy."

"No, it doesn't work that way. You whenever you are doing street repairs or street rehabilitation or construction of street, you have to find the required funding. We suffered tremendously under COVID, where a significant portion of all revenue streams were disrupted. And so, now we are really back to where we wanted to be, and that is how we really fund those projects."
