Construction Worker Went Fishing, Turned Up Dead By Gunshots
Fri, June 7, 2024
He left his home on Thursday morning for another day of fishing only to be found dead behind the Port of Belize area later that night. But who would kill a fisherman on the water's edge, and why? Tonight that's what his relatives are asking. Jomarie Lanza reports.

42 year old Alfredo Rodriguez, affectionately known as "Luis" was described by his relatives as a family man and an avid fisher who enjoyed spending his spare time out at the Port of Belize to fish for the day. And so when he never made it home on Thursday night his common law wife had assumed the worst and her fears were confirmed later that same evening after hearing on the news that a body had been found behind the port of Belize area.

"So far I really have to commend the police because they keep the wife informed of every step that they are making. They have very little detail, because we needed to confirm that it was him this morning."

"Yesterday when she saw it on the new it was a little bit late, so she couldn't have gotten to the morgue in time to have identified the body."

"She didn't mention to you guys that she found it strange he went fishing and he never reach back?"

"Yes, actually - when I came home after 4 from work, she came upstairs and she brought it to my attention that he had gone fishing and he is normally home after 11 and have not return. So, I was the one who told her to relax a little with me, just chill, maybe he went to visit a friend or anything like that."

"She was very fidgety as she felt something. So I was trying to keep her calm, but when she saw the news on LOVE that they posted on Facebook, that was when she said she know that's her husband."

And it was Rodriguez indeed. He was found with multiple gunshot injuries to the body lying face down near the seaside.

"So this is an area that he likes to go and fishing, you guys know that he always go to this area for fishing?"

"Every time, that's the only place he fishing. He has no problem with nobody. He is a Honduran decent young man, he is 42, he goes to fishing, come home, do his construction - he is a family man. He doesn't have issues with anyone. As I mentioned to one of his close friends earlier even his friends are not seeing him as of recent, because he made a whole 360. When I say 360, he wasn't someone that gives trouble, but he like to have fun. He was an entertainer life of the party would call him. But as of recent, because he is common-law maybe about 4 years now, that's a 360. Now he parties at home, he stays at home."

"A lot of people haven't seen him in a long while if it's not for fishing or if they have a job to do they wouldn't see Luis."

According to Rodriguez's sister in law, he mostly kept to himself and would stay within his routine of being at work, home or fishing near the sea

"I don't think someone was trying to rob him. Honestly, we don't really want to come to any conclusion because that is the police's job. We just want to make sure that we put him to rest, because Luis was never a people person, so at this point its question marks in everybody's head, because this was a surprise, not Luis. I am still in disbelief."

And while they wait for answers surrounding his tragic death, his sister in law urges other lone fishermen to alert their families of their whereabouts while out fishing, especially in secluded areas.

"If you know anything of course get in contact with the police, but again to all the young men out there just be careful. If you are going anywhere make someone know, because he was out there fishing alone. It's a sad situation, but you learn from it, so you have to think before you actually move. Like I said who would have thought he went fishing and this would be the outcome. So if you are going fishing and going by yourself, take somebody. Somebody will see something. If you are going to stay out there longer, call somebody. Let somebody know your whereabouts, because he left after 8 in the morning and we thought that he was out there all this while. So we don't know how long this had already happen and he probably was out there. We don't know and it's just sad."

No one has been detained and police declined to comment further today.
