And to young Chi's family, the ComPol says they can be rest assured that this case will be handled with professionalism and transparency. He vows that there will be no cover-ups, and to allay their concerns, he has offered them a chance to sit with the lead investigator, Superintendent Jones, to go through the evidence gathered so far.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I can tell them so long as I sit here as commissioner of police, I am not going to cover the wrongdoing of no police officer, none. It will not serve us any good to do so and again, I would ask them to look at previous instances, what did we do. I think that our track record speaks for itself, in terms of investigating our own. Because we took an oath of office to serve the people of this country fairly without fear or favour, affection of ill will and it must to all manner of people and so when we have our own members stepping out of line, I have always said I hold the police officers at a higher standard, because we are trained and we are trained to exercise great restraint in difficult circumstances. When the ordinary human might see things in a certain way, the police must see it differently. That's how we are trained and I expect that every police officer is going to apply their training to the greater good of society and not to erode public trust and confidence in the department itself and so again, I want to assure the family that we will do everything we can to make sure that the officer or officers who are responsible are held to account."
"Mr. Jones is a very fair investigator. He has no axe to grind in doing this investigation and I am sure that he is going to do it to the best of his ability in ensuring that the truth is unearthed."
"We are not here to cover nobody or nothing. If the family so wishes I have no difficulty. I can have Mr. Jones sit with them or if they want to get an attorney, sit with the attorney that they would choose, go through the file, the evidence and show them what all we have done and what we intend to do. Just to ensure that we give them that level of assurance that they need."
"I can't fault them for feeling that way. They have lost a loved one and neither of us would want to be the position that they are in and so we must understand their pain."
