And an hour after that murder in the city, there was another in Placencia
Village. It’s the second murder that the tourist-friendly village is seeing
in a month – the last one was on February 15th. And what’s worse,
the same man wanted for the first is suspected in the second. He is Gregory
Casildo – a figure even more notorious than Yaga Morris. The Commissioner
of Police today told us what happened at around midnight in Placencia to Samuel
de Jesus Ortiz.
Gerald Westby, Commissioner of Police
“A businessman Mr. Ortiz was about to close his restaurant, just shortly
after midnight when a dark skinned individual came in and asked for a fry chicken.
He told the individual that he does not have fry chicken but he can sell him
a soft drink and when he bent over in the freezer it seems like the person accosted
him and shot him twice in the back. He had his firearm, it appeared that he
was making an effort to turn around but regrettably he could not and he was
shot in the back and other places on his body. Since then the investigation
has concluded or not concluded but the investigation has revealed so far that
the person identified is the same Gregory Casildo who was wanted for the previous.”
Jules Vasquez,
How is he still a free man, someone so notorious, associated with so many violent
crimes?
Gerald Westby,
“Well Jules we have a lot of terrain out there, a lot of concealment
but certainly we’ve been having information and we’ve been following
every lead.”
Jules Vasquez,
Are you surprised that he has turned up in the Placencia area, he was known
originally in the Cayo area?
Gerald Westby,
“Well people will go to vulnerable areas and try to do their thing
down there.”
Ortiz had been shot four times and his store was robbed of an undisclosed
quantity of money. Westby says they have intensified search efforts in the area.
