Why Sharole Saldivar Wants To Be Mayor
posted (November 2, 2011)
Last night we introduced you to one of the PUP Mayoral hopefuls, Karen Bodden.

Today, we spoke to her opponent, Sharole Saldivar. Unlike Bodden who is a total newcomer to politics, Saldivar is a recent addition to the party after she resigned from the Zenaida Moya City Hall in a huff, back in 2007.

At the time, she was city administrator and today she told us, she brings that knowledge base to bear in her candidacy:

Sharole Saldivar - Candidate for PUP Mayor
"I'm a bit nervous; I'm excited as well. I've had the chance to meet with our delegates on a one-on-one basis, and I am very excited. I feel positive."

Jules Vasquez
"Now, this is an unusual convention. In the other municipalities, there have been - well there has been a contest. There have been open conventions. This is a closed convention. You have a pool of 512 people; how will that help you or hurt you?"

Sharole Saldivar
"I believe we both have the same chance. I have been working with the party since 2007, actively, and so I know some of the delegates, but I am not taking anything for granted. I am hitting the pavement; I am meeting with the delegates and lobbying for their support."

Jules Vasquez
"Now I know that you have some experience as the former City Administrator. What is it that you hope to bring to City Hall?"

Sharole Saldivar
"Knowledge, intimate knowledge of the Council, having been there I understand the issues affecting the Council, and the issues that are affecting the residents of the city. And I hope to bring solutions to those issues, working with businesses, working with the residents, I hope to offer solutions. I'm not much of a talker, I am someone who works. I have service working as a public servant. I have experience working at the City Council. I want to work."

Jules Vasquez
"How do you answer the criticism that I am sure some in your party will level at you that, well, you used to work for UDP City Council, for Moya?"

Sharole Saldivar
"Yes, that is true, but I never campaigned for the UDP. I was a public officer, so I was basically neutral. I applied for the job as City Administrator. I was interviewed with other individuals, and I was successful. I was recruited to work at the Council."

Jules Vasquez
"In a delegate situation like this, it's widely felt - well it's known that you need to have the support of big divisions such as Lake I, or divisions with a high number of delegates, Lake I, Freetown, Fort George, and Albert. Those come to mind. Have you been looking specifically at those in blocks, or have you been trying to single out individual delegates?"

Sharole Saldivar
"I have been trying to meet with every single delegate. That has not been possible, but I am doing the ground work. I am not relying solely on any one or two specific divisions."

The convention will be held on Saturday afternoon at St. Mary's Hall.

There are two women competing for mayoral candidacy and total of 15 candidates will vie for 10 councilor candidate openings.
