The Old “Car Con” Catches Attorney
posted (November 9, 2022)
And in other news, an Orange Walk Businessman is out on bail after allegedly swindling a lawyer out of over three thousand dollars - and it's the kind of car scam we hear about all too often in this newsroom.

Two years ago, attorney, 67-year-old Mark Williams, requested assistance from a car dealer, 37-year-old Jonathan Burgos, to purchase a vehicle from the US and have it shipped to Belize. Burgos reportedly told Williams that he required payment of $3,500 upfront for his services. In September of 2020, Williams gave Burgos the money, and since then, Burgos has only given him excuses - no vehicle.

Williams reported the matter to the police and Burgos was detained on Tuesday in Orange Walk.

This evening, Burgos was in Belize City Magistrate's Court on a single charge of obtaining property by deception. He was unrepresented and pleaded not guilty to the charge. There was no objection to the bail and so the Senior Magistrate granted it in the sum of $2,000 plus one surety of the same amount. His next court date is set for December 29th.
