Two prisoners on remand escaped from police custody today, and one of them is considered dangerous.
They are 20 year old Sergio Pineda from Benque Viejo and 25 year old Piers Castillo from Belmopan.
Pineda was charged for two cases of conspiracy to commit the murders of Gonzalo Rosado and Wayne Cadle in BENQUE VIEJO in 2021. And then in 2022 he was accused of a home invasion and rape - also in Benque. He was born in Guatemala.
Piers Castillo faces some charges of theft and is of Salvadorean origin.
So, how did they escape? Well, police took them from the prison for court appearances in Benque today. They were placed in an improvised holding area in a building adjoining the town courthouse. But at 10:40 AM, they somehow escaped. Reports say they may have clambered out through the roof - as neighbors report seeing two men walk out through an adjoining yard. Apparently, they didn't have handcuffs, but police have not said if they somehow slipped out of them. The prison told us they left there with waist chains, as per procedure.
Whatever the case, the pair is on the loose tonight - and Benque police are hunting for them. But, because both have Central American roots, it is not unthinkable that they may have escaped across the river into Guatemala.
