Last night made the third week in a row that a murder has been reported in Ladyville. On April 20th, a double murder rocked the village, and then last week an elderly man was slain. Then, last night, 20-year-old James Bainton was killed.
He was at a football game when the gunman shot him from behind. His family later found out that the suspect is someone Bainton had considered a friend.
But losing their baby brother has left this family distraught, especially since they recently lost their father to cancer. Courtney Menzies visited their home in Ladyville today and has this story.
A Ladyville family is grieving the death of their youngest brother and son after he was killed while attending a football game at the village's sporting complex.
20-year-old James Bainton was with his brothers when an altercation broke out, during which one of his brothers was injured. However, it was afterwards that Bainton was shot in the back by someone he called a friend.
And today, his family was unable to process the news. One of his relatives told us off camera about the last time she spoke with him.
Voice of: Relative of Deceased
"He went out there to watch the football game."
Courtney Menzies:
"Was he a fan of the sport?"
Voice of: Relative of Deceased
"Yes, he always goes out there when the time comes for game, he go and watch it. It's really hard for them, very hard…"
Courtney Menzies:
"Mr Bainton was really young, he's the baby of the bunch."
Voice of: Relative of Deceased
"Yes he is. He have his… well, you know families have their problems of their issues or whatever, but that's family. And it doesn't matter what, they always loved him."
"He was very hardworking. Anybody come, want do a job, he willing to go, and he would go with the person where he could make the most money because he wants money, he always say, he's not supposed to stay broke. You always hear him singing. He has his times when he do talk fool and make you laugh."
"He just, the day before, during the day, he went to work, he went to make his money, and the last time I saw him, he came right at my doorstep, and he said, "weh you dih say?" And I said, "weh you dih say? I see you have a Mine beer in your hand." He said, just a little thing. He gone and then I never saw him after that for the rest of the day."
And she explained that his family had often warned Bainton about the company he kept.
Voice of: Relative of Deceased
"I remember he came and his siblings and so [said], James, be careful with the people you hang with. He's like, don't worry about me, they are my friends, me and them are straight, they have my back, they have my back. But if somebody has your back, as you turn your back on them you will shoot them? What kind of friends are you all to do such a thing like that, regardless of what you all had, if it was a fight or whatever, you could have just fought, let's go, hand fight, let's war it out. Eventually, we could have talked that over and we could have hung out back or whatever, if you all said you were my friends."
"We want justice because yes, because, regardless of what happened, or whatever people want to say about him, his mother deserves to get justice, the family deserves to get justice, everybody deserves to get justice."
And for this family, it's the second loved one they'll be burying in a month's time, since their father passed away in early April. Bainton leaves behind his mother and seven siblings.
