And headlines over this past week were dominated by the gruesome murder of 19-year-old Imarie Galvez, who was found dead in Belmopan. Today, at the start of the House Meeting, Minister of Police, Kareem Musa, offered his condolences.
Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs
"Just take this moment for us as a National Assembly as a House of Representatives to note the passing, the very gruesome passing of Imari Galvez who was murdered just a little outside of Belmopan, or in Belmopan and taken on the Hummingbird Highway, in a very gruesome and heinous fashion and then this morning as well we have another incident in which another young lady was stabbed presumably by her partner, in that instance, the police quick response has led to the apprehension of the individual but certainly it is very telling of the times we are living in and that there are very cruel individuals out there and I think we as parents, we as members in this House, we as leaders in this community, we need to do more in terms of condemning this type of gender based violence and certainly advocating for stiffer penalties and advocating for members of the community, the family members to play a greater role in the lives of our women, if we see something that's going wrong, it is time for us to intervene, if we see consistent abuse taking place, it is time for us to say this is our business as members of the family, as members of the community, and certainly try our very best, our endeavor best to ensure that this type of heinous crime does not continue and so I just want to offer my condolences to the family of Imarie Galvez and at the same time offer our prayers for the young lady that was stabbed this morning."
A post mortem shows the 19 year old was strangled to death.
