Shyne Stands By House Outburst
posted (June 16, 2023)
Earlier in the news, you heard the war of words between the Leader of the Opposition and Minister Mahler. Well, what you didn't see before was a series of Barrow standing up on points of orders during the PM's answer to the question he posed. It could to the point where the government side was visibly annoyed with the constant interruptions. But Barrow told us outside the chambers that he's willing to stand up as many times as it takes to get his point across.

But what about his own outburst? Well, we asked him about that, and he didn't seem to have any regrets about it.

Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition
"It's simple. Both sides need to follow the standing orders and I will get up the entire house meeting every time a standing order is violated and the standing orders make clear that no member of the house can impute improper motives on any member of the national assembly and the prime minister said a member of the national assembly was committing an illegal act, a corrupt act. Yes, he did, the speaker of the house clarified it. And so that is what happens when you impute improper motives on members, that is what happens when you insult members, when you go from debating the substance of bills of legislations, of motions to name calling."

Reporter
"Threats of fight outside."

Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition
"I didn't threatened anyone."

Reporter
"But you accused Minister Mahler of physically assaulting one of his colleagues."

Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition
"I heard that. I don't know if that is true. I heard that from a very reliable source within the cabinet."

Reporter
"But without actual proof. How would you just...?"

Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition
"That's privilege in the house. I'm not saying that out here."

Reporter
"You are saying that they should respect the standing orders, but you are not."

Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition
"Again, I was in my seat, I was not on the mic. And also parliament was suspended at that time."

Reporter
"Madam Speaker suspended it afterwards."

Shyne Barrow, Leader of the Opposition
"I was sitting down. I was not on the mic. If it was on the mic, she would have struck it. There is a 42b that says you shouldn't speak. Both sides are guilty of speaking while someone is talking, but I did not say that on the mic."
