NEMO will have a new National Emergency Coordinator. Daniel Mendez - who is the Governor General's husband - will take over from Shelton Defour.
Like Defour - who was a BDF major, Mendez is a former BDF Captain. A release says Mendez "has over 20 years of experience in leadership, crisis, and disaster management...He previously served as the Disaster Risk Management Specialist at the ministry, coordinating the development of Belize's first Post-Disaster Needs Assessment."
The release adds that he Mendez will lead the implementation of Belize's comprehensive disaster management policies and strengthen disaster and hazards preparedness, and response to reduce overall risk and resiliency in Belize.
Mendez holds a Master of Science in Risk, Crisis, and Disaster Management from the University of Leicester, in the United Kingdom.
