Royal Caribbean Tells Shyne Don’t Sweat, New Definitive Agreement In The Works
posted (June 23, 2023)
And, while there's still a thick buzz of controversy surrounding the Port of Magical Belize, tonight 7News has obtained a copy of a letter from Royal Caribbean - who is partnering in the project - to Leader of the Opposition Shyne Barrow.

Dated today - the correspondence is a response to a letter of caution Barrow sent to the company's CEO, Jason Liberty - warning him that a UDP government might not honor any agreement his company signs with the Briceno Administration.

The letter says, "(Royal Caribbean Group) is fully committed to ensuring a fair, transparent, and sustainable process in Belize...We take this responsibility incredibly serious and conduct a multi-step due diligence process to ensure that each of our initiatives protects the surrounding environment and benefits the local community. RCG takes great pride in achieving these goals through a collaborative engagement with various stakeholders and by strictly adhering to the laws and processes established by each destination we serve." End quote.

It adds that the company has chosen to partner with Portico after a review of all three cruise port projects because, quote, (it) meets our standards for environmental impact and operational viability. The project, as designed, will have a limited impact on surrounding sensitive ecosystems. Of specific importance, the project will not be impacting the fragile and highly sensitive coral around One Man's Key." End quote.

And what about the odious Definitive Agreement? Well, royal Caribbean says it was, quote, "executed prior to RCG's association with Portico on the Port of Magical Belize, and it is our understanding that Portico is working closely with the Government to either amend the Definitive Agreement or execute a new Definitive Agreement to address stakeholder concerns with the existing document." End quote.

They end by inviting Barrow to meet with company executives when they visit Belize.

The letter is from Joshua Carroll, Royal's VP of Destination Development.
