Belize, along with 100 other countries have signed up in partnership with the United Nations to develop a national food system strategy
which seeks to improve and address worldwide issues surrounding nutrition. The Ministry of Agriculture along with local stakeholders are
in the final stages of putting together this strategy.
A stakeholder consultation facilitated by the Ministry of Agriculture Food Security and Enterprise, took place today in Belmopan with an
objective to revise the national food system pathways for Belize, with guidance and input from stakeholders. The man with the rather grand
grand title of "national convener for the pathway, Emilio Montero" says that it's a multi sectoral approach:
Emilio Montero, National Convener, Belize Food system Pathway
"A few years ago Belize was chosen as one of the countries to conduct what is referred to as the Belize food system's profile under the United
Nations umbrella. Then thereafter we were charged after the 2021 food systems summit convened by the United Nations for countries to develop
what we referred to as a food system pathway."
"So here in this consultation meeting that you're seeing here today we have ministry's representative from education agriculture
health sustainable development and even fisheries, rural development, as well as human development to strengthen the pathway that we are
referring to as."
Senator Isabel Bennett Moody, a representative from the national assembly says that parliamentarians play an active role in implementing the
legislation that will serve as a deterrent against hunger and malnutrition.
Isabel Bennett Moody, Senator National Assembly
"The role of parliamentarians is to basically activate and implement a legislation that will help to promote nutrition
in our fight against hunger and malnutrition in the country. And so, when we hear from the technical persons who are the expertise
on the ground who are guiding the different projects and the projects are research based. That kind of data helps to drive legislation
that can help to improve the overall nutritional needs of the people of our country, so as legislators as senators we need to be aware
of the dynamics the different components that make up the different pathways all the activities that are being done to be able to achieve
the world's sustainable goals."
Belize's Food system transformation pathway will be presented at the Stock taking summit in Italy, which will take place between
