Just after midnight, a Hattieville man received a distressing call: his father had been found shot dead on the side of the highway in Hattieville. 56-year-Egbert Arnold was killed late last night, and up to today, his son still had no idea why he was targeted.
Now, the victim's son must endure the grief of losing yet another parent to gun violence. Courtney Menzies spoke with him today and has this story.
56-year-old Egbert Arnold was a father of nine who recently began living by himself in Hattieville Village. But last night, he was shot dead not from where he lived, as he rode his bicycle near mile 17 on the George Price Highway.
According to his son, his father wasn't someone who got into problems, and while he has his own speculations, he said there is no concrete answer for why someone would want Arnold dead.

"I don't know what to say about the situation because my father is not a troublesome person, he's a hustler, he goes and cuts here, if you have maybe a step, something that needs to be fixed, he's the type of handy person to do those things for us so I don't really know the cause of why someone would want to hurt him because he's not a person whereby he would create an issue or try to create chaos between anyone. He just lately moved up here like over a year ago."
"Honestly he didn't mentioned that anybody wanted to do him something personal to him but you know, he's is this type of person, he do go do a type of work for anybody, if they don't pay him the way he deserve to be paid, sometimes he would just leave the job and just go his own way, so you'll never know what you could say about the situation or whatever take place, because like I said, he's not a trouble person."
And while he had a strong personality, Arnold also knew the victim as a loving father and grandfather.

"To be honest, yes, out of most of his children, me and him were very close, because I was the one he usually came to for advice or assistance in any type of way and it hurt me to know that he was with us not too long ago but he's this type of person that he wants to do him, he wants to do what makes him happy, and by doing that, certain things he would want to do, we wouldn't appreciate certain things and he don't want any one to tell him what to do so he prefer be on his own, he's that type of person, and I have to respect that because that is his choice. But he was a sweet person, loving, always have the sweetest words to anyone."
And for Arnold, it's like deja vu, since he's now lost both parents to a bullet. His mother, Delsie Smith was a manager at Triple A Security Services when she was shot by her boss, before he took his own life.
He explained that now, he just has to be strong for his own children.

"To be honest with you, tell me how it feels to lose a mom and a dad by gun violence, it's the worst feeling you could feel but just have to keep the faith and pray to the almighty. Have to be strong because I have three kids so just have to be strong for them. It's rough but I just have to stand here strong."
Police suspect this could be related to another recent shooting.
