Fire In Lake I Caused By Illegal Electrical Wiring
posted (September 29, 2023)

A fire this morning on Berry Street has left four adults and four children without their home. While there were no injuries, this family of eight - two brothers, their girlfriends, and their kids - are now left without any of their possessions.

The fire started in a bedroom, and according to the station supervisor at the fire department, it was caused by illegal electrical wiring. Today, he told us more.

Kenneth Mortis, Station Supervisor "This morning we received the call of a house fire in the Lake Independence area. Whereby on arrival we observed a wooden structure fully engulfed in flames. Fire fighting operations commenced and we got the fire under control with total extinguishment, thus confiding the Fiasco to one structure. We started our investigation in which we learnt that a wooden by 16 by 32 which housed 4 family members was totaled. These four people were displaced as a result of the fire and the investigation revealed that the cause of this fire was as a result of illegal wiring or illegal connection so to speak. This morning's event was an unfortunate one whereby we see the recurrent cause for these illegal connections leading to a situation such as a fire which we all know what we enjoy today we will not always enjoy tomorrow. Unfortunately this is the case for this family. Its part of statistics that we have always had concerns with the BEL team unfortunately this is something that needs to be looked at more in depth in my view as a community aspect to see what is in place for these families that either one cannot afford to legally electrify their houses or what can be done legally if needs be to these people who continuously put not only themselves but also an entire neighborhood at risk."

We stress that while Mortis says it was a family of four, there were actually eight people living in the home.
