Oscar Selgado Trial Continues
posted (December 19, 2023)
Attorney Oscar Selgado, who is accused of abetment to murder, was back in court this morning for the continuation of his trial. However, today's proceedings ended abruptly after his attorney, Adolph Lucas, raised a concern about the voir dire, or "trial within a trial" that concluded during the last session.

As we told you, the result was that Giovanni Ramirez's witness statement would be admissible since he is in fear of his life.

But today Lucas needed clarity on whether he'd be able to re-cross examine the witnesses who testified in the voir dire. We spoke with him after the case was adjourned.

Adolph Lucas, Attorney
"What has happened, the judge is asking us, particularly the defense, whether I agree to incorporate what has happened in the voir dire, in the main trial. So I was telling the judge that I do not have the judgements that is referred to in the BEGS book, Belize Guyana and Barbados, so he provided me, which I'm grateful for, the judgements that were referred to so I need time to read them so the judge decided, listen, let's do it January next year."

"The concern would be, if I agree to incorporate what has happened in the voir dire, will I be able to cross examine witnesses in reference to what happened in the voir dire? Will I be making any submission referencing what happened in the voir dire? I do not want any obstruction because of my agreement so he just said, no, you'll be free to do that, but I said I want to read the case, the judgement before I do."

Reporter:
"Can you explain the purpose of the ComPol and Mr Ferrufino being here?"

Adolph Lucas, Attorney
"I'm speaking from the statement that has been supplied to me. They're going to speak about listening to the tape."

Reporter:
"What they heard."

Adolph Lucas, Attorney
"What they heard. Selgado, along with this guy, Ramirez. Remember, there's no tape."

Selgado will be back in court January 22nd.
