Community Says Alleged Murder Was A Menace; ComPol Hadn’t Heard
posted (January 10, 2024)
The first murder of the year happened on January 7th, when 34-year-old Christon Logan was shot dead outside of a nightclub in Bella Vista. His alleged killers, 39-year-old Cornelio Martinez and his brother, Ernesto Martinez, are currently on remand at the Belize Central Prison.

And since the murder, we've received numerous reports that both brothers have terrorized Mango Creek village, and that the elder brother, Cornelio Martinez, has allegedly brandished his licensed firearm in public on multiple occasions.

Today we asked the ComPol why it was never revoked.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I don't know about that and no report has ever come to my desk in respect to Mr Martinez behaving in such a way in Independence. And this is the thing, when something happens, you hear all kind of story. Why not report when it is happening? As far as I am concerned, there is no report against him that would have warranted his license firearm being revoked. As a matter of fact, nothing came to me about him being a tyrant or behaving in any way disorderly within the village of Independence."

Courtney Menzies:
"We also received reports that after he was detained, he was given special treatment in that his family was there and they were all sitting around in the police station with him."

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"I don't know, I can't manage every police station. I know that after he was detained I gave instructions to the police to go a search his home, see if he has any firearm there, if he has any to go and take the firearm away, get him into police custody and do what needs to be done. As far as I am concerned, he committed a crime, a very heinous one, and he should be punished to the full extent of the law. I cannot say the police gave him any special treatment because I was not there, I will have to wait and see."
