Fonseca Says With Increasing Imprint Of Trauma, Counselors Needed In Schools
posted (February 23, 2024)
The Menzies murder was the third countrywide in 24 hours - after a double murder in Belize City on Wednesday night. That took the life of 36 year old Troy Hyde and 15 year old ACC student Lamesha Moody.

Her school put out a statement saying "Lamisha, at just 15 years old, was more than a student; she was a bright light cherished by her peers and loved by her teachers.

Words cannot express the grief we feel. Our hearts ache for Lamisha's family, and we stand with them in solidarity during this unimaginable time. To our students, please lean on each other for strength. Our counseling team and spiritual leaders are here for anyone who needs support."

Today, the Education Minister said that, indeed, counseling is a must:

Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education
"As a father, as a citizen of Belize, but as a minister of education, absolutely. It's absolutely devastating. Whenever our young students get caught up in this sort of gang violence, you know, it's absolutely tragic. And we condemn that in the strongest possible terms."

Reporter
"Will the ministry be making sure that maybe counselors are sent to the school to speak with the students."

Francis Fonseca, Minister of Education
"Yeah, that has become a, you know, modus operandi for us now."

"We always make sure that whenever these incidents happen as a matter of priority that is triggered. And we reach out to the schools and say, listen, any support you need for your students, counseling, whatever other support you need, let us know. So that's already been done."

Her school will hold a memorial service and provide what it calls "opportunities for remembrance and healing."

No one has been charged for her murder.
