Jury Find Anke Doehm Guilty Of Child Cruelty
posted (March 4, 2024)
In 2017, her case caused a sensation when 13 year old Faye Lin Cannon died on San Pedro - the result of apparent physical abuse and malnutrition.

Their adoptive parents, Anke and David Doehm were charged for cruelty to a child - and today a jury of 9 found Anke Doehm guilty. Her husband David had taken his life shortly after the charges were brought.

In her submissions to the jurors, DPP Cheryl Lynn Vidal showed jurors the gruesome pictures of Faye Lin Cannon, which showed the 13-year-old girl's malnourished and badly bruised body.

The crown's main witness was a sister of the deceased who testified virtually. She told the court that she saw David Doehm stomp Faye in the chest. She said that their mother Anke was right there in the room and she told him he could not do that, but then she left and went to Belize City. According to the sister, that's when Faye Lin began to breath heavily.

Still, Faye Lin Cannon was never taken to a hospital prior to her death. DPP Vidal concluded that the reason why the mother chose not to take her child to the hospital was because all the bruises on her body which would have seen by a doctor.

The Doctor's post mortem on Faye Lin Cannon said that she died from compression of the chest, the injury compromised her heart and lungs.

However, Doehm's attorney, Adolph Lucas Sr., said that the culprit is the deceased David, not Anke Doehm. He asked them to acquit Anke of the charge because the crown did not prove the charge of cruelty to a child against his client.

The jury of 9 disagreed and after three hours of deliberation they emerged with a unanimous verdict of guilty. With that, the newly appointed Judge of the High Court, Justice Derick Sylvester remanded Doehm to the Belize Central Prison pending sentencing.

The crown was represented by the DPP herself, Cheryl Lynn Vidal while Doehm was represented in the trial by Attorney, Adolph Lucas Sr., a former judge of the High Court.
