Shooter Took More Than Two Lives, He Took Belmopan's Innocence
posted (March 13, 2024)
And while that red flag law or something like it is urgently needed - whatever it is, it will be too little, too late. That's because Robert Joseph's gun killed more than two people yesterday, he killed a part of Belmopan's innocence.

Today, Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde lamented the tragedy and said that indeed, it's without precedent:

Cordel Hyde, Deputy Prime Minister
"Yesterday was, at least in my memory, that was kind of a first. Like, we've heard lots of crazy stuff. Like, lots of things have happened in Belize. I mean, what happened on George Street some years ago, like, that was like, that shook us to the core."

"Lots of things have happened. Yesterday was kind of a first. Like, you can't wrap your mind around what happened. It just seems insane. It seems, it defies all logic. It just doesn't make a lot of sense."

"And you don't know what inspired that, what caused that. But I say that to say that this is fun-loving Belize. This is where we welcome people. This is where people want to come here. People want to come here because we have the right spirit. We have love. We care for people. We treat people right. What happened yesterday, like I said, I'm an old man. I've been around a long time. I've never seen anything like that. And I pray we never see anything like that again."

A statement from the U.S. Embassy says, quote, "We stand prepared to offer support to the Government of Belize in both its ongoing investigation and broader efforts to reduce crime and violence in Belize."
