Jamaican Traveler Alleges Corrupt Immigration Officer At Airport
posted (March 21, 2024)

Ladyville Police are questioning Immigration Officers from the Phillip Goldson Airport after a Jamaican alleged that they hustled him out of all his money. The traveler claims that other visitors from Jamaica put a few hundred US dollars in their passports to be processed and sent through.

But, he claims the immigration officer airport kiosk would not process him until he put ALL his money inside the passport. So he went from the kiosk back to the restroom where he says he put three thousand US in the passport and gave it to the officer. After that, he says they rushed him out of the airport - so fast that he couldn't even get his luggage. So, he went to the Ladyville police station to make a report alleging that his money and his bags had been stolen.

Today the CEO for the Ministry of Immigration Tanya Santos told us, quote, "I confirm that officers have been taken in for interviews by police regarding allegations made by a Jamaican national." End quote.

The background to this is that Jamaicans - even though they are CARICOM nationals - are often "refused leave to land" in Belize because there have been cases where they are using Belize as a means to go north to the United States.

Anecdotal reports over the past few months tell us that this has created an opportunity for corrupt immigration officers to refuse to land the Jamacians until they put a few hundred US dollars for the officers in their passport.
