And the Minister of Human Development shared the sentiment - that in this case, the system has failed the young woman. She stated that the methods of interventions to protect women in abusive situations need to be strengthened.
Dolores Balderamos Garcia, Minister of Human Development
"I don't want to cast the blame on any individual or any entity but I would have to acknowledge that that sounds like a failure of the system so we have to improve the system that the interventions and the responses to somebody going through that kind of thing will be more vigorous because I think there is a case, I don't know the outcome of it yet but there is a case before the Caribbean Court of Justice from Trinidad in which a young woman, again, a similar circumstance, bringing to the attention of the police, two, three, four times of somebody breaking a restraining order and I think the case actually went to court, was it a failure of the government and the entire system? I don't know the outcome of the case but I will look it up but really what I want to say is we have to tighten up and we have to really straighten up the intervention to assist women in that kind of situation. I want you to know that the National Women's Commission is now a statutory body, we have good programs and outreach that is concerned, we have our committed commissioners who by the way are volunteer workers, they don't get paid, and we also have our women and families support department and we have all our various partners."
"So I think it is a matter of strengthening our systems and our responses."
