posted (May 2, 2024)

Another union leader, the President of the Belize National Teachers Union discussed something far less notional - and that's the brain drain of teachers. They are being attracted to other countries who are trying to recruit them for better pay and better conditions.

The president said she is aware of it:

Nadia Caliz, BNTU National President
"Yes, we are losing members because our members are going and that is the reason why we love the fact that government has agreed to look at that, look at the entire compensation package of workers. They need to look at salaries that are more attractive. Our members are more attracted to what the other countries are offering and that's why they are going. And when you look at people wanting to improve the quality of life, we can't force them to stay. Yes, we're experiencing brain drain and that's why it's important for us to undertake this exercise that government agreed for us to do today."
