Solution For Smuggling Sugar
posted (May 13, 2024)
And another issue PM Briceno discussed with President Lopez Obrador was sugar. You'll remember the great sugar shortage of late 2023, during the months when Belizeans desperately needed to make their Christmas cake. It was because large volumes of our low cost sugar were being smuggled over to Mexico, because sugar there is. significantly more expensive.

But aside from that, Briceno also brought up the matter of cattle and maybe even coconut exportation.

John Briceno, Prime Minister
"We spoke about sugar, as you all know, a lot of our sugar is being contraband into the Chetumal region and it creates shortages. The president agreed that he would talk to the Minister of Economy for us to look at the tariff regime to be able to expect to reduce it and also to give us a certain quota to be able to export sugar into Belize, we spoke about cattle, the presidential decree has come to an end and we're looking at expanding it so that we could continue to export cattle into Mexico. We also look at coconuts, a new industry in Belize and we'll be working with Senasica and the Minister of Agriculture who was there with me, we started discussion as to how we would be able to get our coconuts following the requirements from Mexico and so we spoke also about that."

We should note that the Prime Minister's family is a large scale coconut producer.
