Stop Order For Caye Caulker Seawall But Developer Pushes On
posted (May 29, 2024)
And in Caye Caulker, there are also complaints about lawless development.

Fishers on that island have been complaining to us about a developer building a seawall despite being issued a stop order. The fishers are concerned that once the seawall is built they will not have access to their boats. When we asked the area representative for a comment today he told us that compliance must be followed.

Andre Perez, Area Representative of Belize Rural South
"The issue of that sea while there it is being looked at we already have the department of the environment, a permanent office now in San Pedro town but also Caye Caulker is also part of the jurisdiction of the department of environment, and it is being investigated and looked at as well, and we are fighting right now, major incident all along and all across, and it comes to compliance. And once they are not compliant, the laws have to take on. There is nothing where by the minister or the village council is encouraging there are laws and ways how to do things and they are rightfully concerned, and we are looking after it."

And while that's what the Minister said, villagers tell us that despite the stop order which said work should have stopped by May 20th - since then the work on the seawall continues.
