Moratorium On Golf Carts For San Pedro Coming
posted (June 6, 2024)

If you've been to Ambergris Caye recently, you might have noticed it's a bit congested. That's because it's a 25 mile long island with golf carts, vehicles, vans, and big trucks squeezing the cobblestone streets every day.

The traffic of what was once laidback tourist getaway into a bustling, tense and chaotic town. Yesterday the Minister of Transport said that he noticed it when he was there, and he's working on a solution.

Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Transport
"I was in San Pedro last week and likewise Caye Caulker and I saw the chaos in San Pedro with the amount of traffic and so we are trying to come up with a plan to present to Cabinet how we can mitigate and reduce the amount of traffic in San Pedro because if I was a tourist I would never visit San Pedro because it's too much traffic. I'm hopeful that once it works then we'll see the results."

Jules Vasquez:
"I understand it's a traffic problem, but it's also a volume problem, they have too much heavy equipment, too much golf cart, too much vans, too many vehicles."

Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Transport
"We will ask for a moratorium on golf carts so you can only maybe replace the one that you have without being able to bring any additional golf cart because it's too congested."
