An alleged burglar was killed last night in San Pedro. It happened in the Secret Beach area where the property manager says he caught him in the act of breaking in through a window.
Just before 9:00, 27 year old Alexi Chavarria was inside one of the units at Secret Beach Cabanas sleeping with his wife and child when he heard noise coming from the verandah area of the building.
He got up and retrieved his licensed 9mm pistol and went out into the living room area where he heard noise coming from the windows as if someone was trying to break it open. And then he heard a loud bang as something broken in the kitchen area.
He ran to the area and says he saw a man crawling in through the window with the upper part of his body already inside the house. He shouted at the man to stop, but says he continued coming in. Fearing for his life he fired his gun in the direction of the intruder and killed him right there. When police responded 45 minutes later, they found 46-year-old Steven Francis Arceo's body half way in and half way out of the window with a fatal gunshot injury.
Police are calling it a shooting death - and say they are investigating.
The deceased Arceo is a nephew of former area rep Patty Arceo. In a family statement today she told us, quote, "We the family of Steven Arceo, share the sad news of his untimely passing. One of the hardest things to do is to identify a gunned loved one. We are awaiting the post mortem and the police report as there are so many unanswered questions. We want to thank the many friends that are expressing their heartfelt condolences."
