Today the Anti Trafficking in Persons Council launched its Strategy to combat human trafficking in Belize. Adele Catzim-Sanchez, CEO, Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples' Affairs, spoke about the importance of partnership, training, and accomplishments in cases investigated.

Adele Catzim-Sanchez- CEO,Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples' Affairs
"The first, of course, is looking at capacity building, capacity building systems strengthening, as well as training. The first thing we need to do is to know what we're working with and to understand what human trafficking is. And there are new nuances, important nuances that through training, we are able to understand. The minister mentioned, you know, looking at human trafficking and human smuggling that are interrelated, but they have been different, and then understanding commercial sexual exploitation and all the other things."

"Sanchez states that it is through these partnerships with international agencies that they have been able to conduct trainings with the general public, frontline workers, officials, and those of the vulnerable population."

"In terms of cases investigated, as the referrals come in, the cases go up and down. But I want you to note that over the years, we're seeing a flow of cases coming in and it's gone in 2020 from 2 at this point is gone. To 14 or 15. And we're in mid-year and we're already at ten cases that have been investigated."

Juanna Murillo, Coordinator for the Atips Council
"'If you know anything about the way that we've done our work, we've been using what we call for the national action plan for the past couple years, we had one 2018-2020, 2021-2023. And the action plan has led us to where we are. It was very useful but we realized that human trafficking being a transnational threat means that we have to begin to evolve and we have to look at strategizing in a way that modernizes our approach and how we can really meet our ultimate goal which is behavior change in our communities and in our mindsets of persons, women, men, girls, and boys are seen or how they are expected to be exploited by traffickers."
