Minister Blames environment For Coastal Flooding
posted (June 28, 2024)
One week ago, the Coastal Road became temporarily impassable after a downpour of heavy rains during the week. It's the result of a domino effect created by the alarming scale of deforestation in the area. One that the minister today called a major issue they must act quickly to minimize.

Julius Espat, Minister of Infrastructure
"It's happening you know we are in the rainy season I think it's more active that normal. What we have been experiencing I think is a part of our own making. Deforestation has become a major issue and we have to be a careful about it. The drought is a factor of deforestation and when the rain comes it's also one of the problems that happen and so we have to deal with it and we have to find a way to make sure we minimize whatever repercussions that come."

"Have you read the letter that was submitted by the conservationist I think it was a dozen of them who signed and expressed their concerns regarding the deforestation in that area along the Maya corridor."

Julius Espat, Minister of Infrastructure
"Yes I read it and we've been in communication for quite some time. In fact on the coastal we had sat with them during the construction and they had requested that we increase some of the culverts that were put in and so we did but it's hard to be able to deal with a situation that you are not aware of. The conservationists they have a point and they have a voice and they are expressing their concerns which I think is valid and we as a government will definitely have to look at it."
